Top Tips to Keep Your Kids Safe Around Water This Summer

by Azure Sullivan

It is getting warmer and summer is fast approaching. Summertime is a great time to get outdoors and enjoy the sun and warm weather. But it’s important to remember that with summer comes the increased risk of water-related accidents. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children ages 1-4, and one of the top five causes of unintentional injury death for all age groups. In this blog post, we will provide 10 tips to help keep your kids safe around water this summer.

Drowning facts:

Ages 1-4 – most drownings happen in home swimming pools but can occur in hot tubs and spas.

Older children and adolescents – most drownings happen in bodies of water including lakes, rivers, ponds and oceans

Here are our top tips for water safety this summer:

– Teach your kids to swim. This is the best way to prevent drowning. If you don’t know how to swim, enroll in a class with your children. Some places to sign up for swimming lessons include the YMCA, Red Cross, and local recreation centers.

– Don’t let your kids swim alone. Always have an adult present who can watch them and provide assistance if needed. Adults should also take precautions when supervising children near water by staying within arm’s reach of young children at all times.

– Designate an adult to watch the water whenever there are children swimming. This person should be responsible for watching the children and making sure they are safe.

– Keep children away from pool drains, pipes, and other openings. They can get sucked into these and become trapped.

-Have adult supervision at all times when children are near water, including when they are playing in sprinklers or wading pools.

– Don’t let your kids play in or near bodies of water that are not supervised by an adult. This includes lakes, rivers, ponds, etc.

– Make sure your kids know never to go into water that is over their heads. They should also know never to dive into water unless they know it is deep enough.

– Teach your kids what to do if they see someone in trouble in the water. They should know to call for help and never try to rescue someone who is drowning.

– Keep an eye on your kids when they are swimming. Don’t get distracted by other things going on around you.

– Have a plan in place in case of an emergency. Make sure everyone knows what to do and where to go if someone goes missing or gets hurt.

Home Pools

To prevent drownings in home pools, the following safety measures should be taken:

– Put up a fence around your pool. This will help keep kids out when you’re not there to watch them.

-Keep doors and gates to the pool area locked at all times when not in use.

-Install a four-sided fence that is at least four feet tall around the perimeter of the pool.

-Make sure there is a self-closing, self-latching gate on the fence.

-Do not leave toys in or around the pool area. Toys

can attract kids to the water even when there is no one around to watch them.

-Keep chairs, tables, and other furniture away from the pool area.

-Clear the deck or patio around the pool of any clutter that could be a trip hazard.

-Make sure the pool area is well lit at night so you can see if someone is in the water.

-Have a phone near the pool so you can call for help if needed.

-Know how to swim and provide CPR in case of an emergency.
